This is part of a mini series where we will cover different topics.

What is the best kind of leather to make bracelets from?

  • For bracelets, it is often better to use leather cords. These can be flat leather cords, round leather cords or braided leather cords. Of course, the style you choose varies on the look you are after. For a sturdier bracelet, Italian leather is a good option, as it is quite rigid.
  • If you want to make a more dynamic bracelet, it's better to opt for braided leather as it offers a textural element.
  • For a sleek and classic look, a flat leather or round leather cord is great as in a solid colour it can be very versatile.
  • If comfort is a priority for you, Nappa leather is the most optimal option as it is very soft and supple. However, it is more expensive than the other options for this reason.

What is the best alternative to leather?

If you don't want to use real leather for your creations, and so are looking for a vegan option, one of the most popular options is a phenomenon called Pleather. This is a fabric made from plastic and polyester. But for an even better option, from an environmental perspective, leather can also be made from plant products such as apple, pineapple leaf and mushroom-based materials. So the best way to kill two birds with one stone is to make leather from food waste.

How can you determine the quality of leather?

Slight differences are therefore completely normal and precisely a sign of its quality, as it is a natural product. You can also use scent, which is also a characteristic of leather.

Is it better to use leather or suede, and why?

This depends a lot on what kind of look you want to achieve in your design. Suppose you are designing shoes; for a slightly chunkier but softer look, it is better to choose suede cords. Think of slippers, for example. This is due to the coarse fibre structure created during production. The only downside for suede is that it will require a lot of maintenance to keep in pristine condition. Therefore, you shouldn’t choose suede to be the material for an item you will wear daily. For a smooth, luxurious and sleek look, plain leather is better. Plus it is also very

Can leather bracelets get wet?

Leather is a natural substance that can repel water. However, that doesn't mean you can just go showering or swimming with leather jewellery. Even when washing your hands, we recommend taking off your bracelet for a while. This is because the natural oils present in the leather seep out, causing the quality of leather to deteriorate significantly, as it will become brittle. For example, it can discolour, and you don't want that.  It is also vital that if leather gets wet, it is allowed to fully dry out.

We hope to see your creations!
