Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an open and a closed jump ring?
Open jump rings have a gap (cut) in the ring that allows them to be opened with pliers to thread on a charm, clasp, or other component, then closed again. Closed rings are soldered or welded with no gap — they cannot be opened but provide a stronger, permanent connection. Use open rings for attaching components during assembly; use closed rings where a fixed loop is needed that will not be opened.
How do I open and close a jump ring without distorting it?
Use two pairs of flat-nose or chain-nose pliers. Grip each side of the ring gap and twist one side toward you and one side away — do not pull the two sides apart laterally, as this deforms the ring. To close, reverse the action until the two ends meet cleanly with no gap.
What jump ring size do I need for attaching charms to leather cord?
For most leather cord charm attachments, a jump ring of 4mm–6mm diameter works well. The ring must be large enough to pass through the charm loop and allow the cord to move freely. For thicker cords or larger charms, use a 6mm–8mm ring. See our guide Choosing the Right Findings for Jewelry Making for detailed sizing advice.
Can stainless steel jump rings be used with brass or copper clasps?
Yes — mixed metals are common in jewellery production. The only consideration is visual consistency: if your clasp is gold brass and your jump ring is steel, the colour contrast may be visible at the connection point. Where a matched finish is important, choose jump rings in a matching material and plating.
